Swanton Village Council is considering an ordinance that would prohibit animal waste on athletic fields and playgrounds.

The ordinance was read for the second time at the June 25 council meeting.

Jon Gochenour, village administrator, said, "We currently have no regulations" and owners often let their pets roam free on baseball diamonds because they're fenced in.

"We've gotten complaints from parents and coaches," he said. "Kids try to play baseball or softball and they're falling in it or stepping in it."

The ordinance would require owners to clean up waste deposited by pets and to keep their dogs on leashes at all times.

The ordinance is to be read for the third time at the July 16 council meeting.

Swanton: Rotary Foundation gives library $1,800

The Swanton Rotary Foundation Inc. has donated $1,800 to the Swanton Public Library's children's collection. Director Janelle Thomas accepted the award from retiring Swanton Rotary President Pat Pilliod during a luncheon on June 28.

The donation will go toward purchasing nonfiction books and updating the World Book Encyclopedia set. Other possibilities for spending the funds include replacing damaged books and buying new books for all ages.

The donation was made possible by a February, 2011, fund-raiser by Swanton Rotary Club, and a $600 grant from Rotary District 6600.
