Toledo firefighters rescued three unconscious people from a burning house in East Toledo early Sunday.

A 12-year-old who escaped the blaze at 702 Dover Pl. told firefighters arriving after the 6:05 a.m. call that two adults and another child were still inside, said Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld, a Toledo Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters carried out the three, who had been overcome by smoke in a first-floor bedroom, the lieutenant said.

Two were taken to Mercy St. Charles Hospital in Oregon and then were flown to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center; the third was taken directly to St. Vincent. Their names and conditions were unknown as of Sunday evening.

The fire department said the blaze was under control at 6:36 a.m., but crews remained several hours.

Lieutenant Hertzfeld estimated damage at $25,000. An accidental cause appeared likely, but the fire investigation was incomplete Sunday night, he said.

The Lucas County auditor's Web site lists the house as being built in 1952 and owned by Laura K. Vargo.
