Wojciechowski deserved being in spotlight again

7/15/2012

Kudos for the story "No go for Wojo" about Greg Wojciechowski. He deserves the recognition.

Steve Junga served not only Wojo but also himself with distinction in this well-written article.

In my first year at Whitmer High School (1967-68), my third year of teaching, I met Greg. The first day of my assigned homeroom, I looked around: One corner was occupied by a single person -- Greg.

As a newcomer to Whitmer and the Toledo area, I did not know of Steve Kerlin and the reputation of the Whitmer wrestlers. I quickly learned. And I quickly learned what a great person Greg Wojciechowski was and is.

His not being able to participate in the Olympics -- darn!

I saw Greg often at Torio Health Club (I belonged to Harvey Bowles' health club for women next door) when he was at Whitmer and at UT. Often when I was swimming, the Torio sliding door would open: Greg would walk out and say hello.

Recently, Greg reappeared in my life. And this just affirms the kind of person he is. A recent death in our family brought a phone call and then a visit from Greg. He shared his experience and gave us a book which had helped him when his son died. How thoughtful, how special -- just out of the blue -- after all these years.

It provided a glimpse into the kind of athlete he was, the kind of coach he was, the father he was, the person he is.

And the Sunday article affirmed all of those qualities and more.

Hackenberg right about true heroes

Dave Hackenberg is right.

Heroes are not found on the football field. As a veteran I still get chills up my spine whenever the Star Spangled Banner is played.

I think of all those military personnel who did not return home from the wars so that we can enjoy our freedom in this great country.

Hack's column was right on the money and well written.

Any enemy could release Asian carp

The story about Asian carp written by Matt Markey, Blade outdoors editor, makes me wonder if the battle isn't already lost for the Great Lakes.

What is to stop any enemy of our country from transporting a bucket of these fish and dumping them into any lake of their choosing?

Soccer has many fans in the area

After being a subscriber and reader of The Blade for 60 years, I am amazed how you still ignore soccer. Many of the MLS games have crowds of 50,000 fans.

You have completely ignored the European Championships and don't have anything to report on the championship game.

There are thousands of young people playing soccer and love the game.

Does The Blade have anyone in the sports department with any knowledge of the game? Or do you just ignore it?

Editor's note: We did report on the final game when Spain defeated Italy.

Less popular sports need more coverage

I like your newspaper. I appreciate what you are doing for the community.

I would appreciate it if you could inform the public on the pressing problems on the local environment. These conflicts must be brought to the attention of the people.

Also, bringing more popularity to less popular sports would be beneficial to those competing in them, such as track, cross country, swimming, lacrosse, golf, and bowling.
