The Toledo Waterways Initiative will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Frederick Douglass Community Association, 1001 Indiana Ave., about the city's combined sewer overflow tunnel system.

Cleaning and improvement projects include three tunnels and sewers north and south of Swan Creek in South Toledo and downtown. The downtown tunnel projected started in July and is about to enter a second phase.

All three tunnels will be revamped in the second phase, with mechanical screens, new screening buildings, and submersible pump replacements. That work is to be completed in the fall of 2014. An estimated $100 million worth of construction projects is under way in the initiative, which is federally mandated.
