PORT CLINTON -- Two people were injured when a freight train and a car collided Thursday night on Tettau Road at Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks near this Ottawa County community, the Ohio State Patrol said today.

Kenneth Godfrey, 32, of Port Clinton, who was a passenger in the car driven by Jeremiah Pitts, 35, of Lacarne, Ohio, was flown to Mercy St. Vincent’s Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition today.

Mr. Pitts was driven to Magruder Hospital, Port Clinton, where his condition was not released.

The car was driving south on Tettau in Ottawa County's Erie Township about 10 p.m. when the driver failed to stop at the railroad crossing, causing the car to strike a train car on the right side, according to the patrol's Sandusky post. The car was then pushed into the railroad crossing sign where it came to rest, the patrol said.

No one on the train was injured, troopers said.

The railroad crossing lights and gates were operating correctly at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.

Port Clinton is about 40 miles east of Toledo
