Drive aims to help out food bank, meal site
10/1/2012Washington Local Schools is aiming high to break a record with an initiative that will benefit area food banks.
To do this, the 6,800-student Toledo school district is asking for help from the community to support a campaign called ImpactNWOhio Food.
The district is asking students and their parents to bring food items to school this week. It is also asking people to drop off canned and boxed goods and toiletries to school buildings.
“The whole idea is to collect what is needed to feed the community,” said school district spokesman Wendy Farran. “The goal is to have the largest food drive in the history of Toledo.”
Drop-off bins for food donations are at the high school, two junior high schools, and eight elementary buildings through Friday during regular classroom hours. A list of building locations and needed items can be obtained at www.wls4kids.org.
Ms. Farran said CedarCreek Church began collecting last month for ImpactNWOhio Food and finished Sunday. She said the school district is picking up where the church left off.
Information on the food drive attached to bags donated by The Andersons, Inc. of Maumee, a sponsor in the drive, went home with students last week. They are being asked to return the sacks with items.
Food is to be donated to the Vision Ministries Kitchen and the Seagate Food Bank. A list of acceptable items is on www.impactnorthwestohio.com.
The most desired products include peanut butter and jelly, hearty soup or chili, and pasta. Grocery store gift cards can also be donated.
Also sponsoring the drive are The Blade, Buckeye CableSystem, Cumulus Toledo, and ProMedica.
