People who qualify for special paratransit rides may begin riding regular transit bus service for free Nov. 1, the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority announced Monday.

The free rides are intended to encourage those who qualify for Toledo Area Regional Paratransit Service travel to use the regular buses whenever they can, thus freeing up the costlier TARPS service for other passengers.

To ride the regular buses, passengers must be able to get to and from bus stops on their own, with drivers’ assistance limited to operating wheelchair lifts and helping with wheelchair tie-downs.

People with disabilities formerly paid half fare -- currently 50 cents -- to ride regular TARTA buses. TARPS fare is $2. Both services are heavily subsidized by property taxes and other non-operating revenue.
