Hurricane to bring strong winds to northwest Ohio

Waves crash over the Miller Boat Line on Catawba Island, as the effects of Hurricane Sandy are felt along the Lake Erie coastline in Ottawa County.

A high wind warning goes into effect throughout the northwest Ohio region today at noon, bringing strong winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusting up to 70 mph.

Remnants of Hurricane Sandy are expected to cause high winds, 15 to 20-foot Lake Erie waves, and possible flooding along shoreline counties such as Erie, Sandusky, and Ottawa, said meteorologist John Mayers, of the National Weather Service in Cleveland.

Mr. Mayers said among the places where flooding potential is greatest is in northern Erie County, the Sandusky area, and northern parts of Lorain County. He said it’s possible for wind gusts to reach 70 mph in Lucas County, where it has not yet begun to rain.

The high wind warning currently is set to expire at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

“The worst is yet to come. This is kind of a taste of what is to come,” Mr. Mayers said.
