MONROE -- A Monroe woman was killed and another was seriously injured when they were struck by a pickup truck as they stood in the roadway Tuesday on South Custer Road east of Raisinville Road in Monroe Township, authorities said.

Elizabeth Winter, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Nicole Holt, 29, was in listed in critical condition condition at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said.

The women were struck about 7:46 p.m. by a pickup driven by John Chiotti, 57, also of Monroe, who was westbound on South Custer in the left travel lane. It was unknown why the pedestrians were in the roadway, sheriff deputies said.

Mr. Chiotti was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
