PORT CLINTON — Nearly three-dozen dogs rescued from a suspected puppy mill in Holmes County will not be ready for adoption until after Dec. 1, an official at the Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary said.

The 34 dogs will be getting vaccinations and vet checkups next week, and the sanctuary, located on State Road in Port Clinton, will not be open for visitors until after an announcement on their adoption is made, sanctuary CEO Nancy Benevento-Brown said. The dogs, all small breeds, went to the sanctuary last weekend.

Cash donations may be made, or adoption applications obtained, at the sanctuary's Web site at www.islandshas.wix.com/i and may be mailed to 2337 S. Linda Dr., Marblehead 43440. The sanctuary, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, is in need of blankets, towels, laundry soap, disinfectant, puppy food, brown small-bites dog food and other supplies. A donation box is in front of the State Road facility.
