Volunteers with digital cameras are being recruited statewide to help photograph grave markers of the more than 7,000 known veterans of the War of 1812 buried in Ohio cemeteries.

The goal is to develop a searchable Web site. Current listings are found at www.ohiodaughters1812.org/graveindex. The project is conducted by the Ohio Society of Daughters of 1812.

An example of the work so far can be seen at the Web site. Search under a county to see which cemeteries have veterans buried there, and the names of the veterans identified thus far.

Photos of the veteran’s grave marker, his wife’s grave marker, and the cemetery sign are displayed, as available, on each veteran’s Web page. Susan Leininger, president of the Ohio Society of Daughters of 1812, said this is a work in progress. People interested in helping should contact Mrs. Leininger at ohiousd1812@gmail.com.
