Freighter strikes dock in Oregon, leaks oil
12/12/2012Fuel oil leaked from a Canadian freighter that struck a bulkhead at an iron ore dock in Oregon on Tuesday morning, but the leak spill was contained by booms across the dock slip, the Coast Guard reported.
The vessel CSL Tadoussac, delivering about 27,000 tons of taconite ore to the CSX Torco Dock, struck the dock wall just before 8:30 a.m., puncturing one of its tanks. The tank leaked for just under 2 hours. The crew pumped its oil into other tanks lowered the damaged tank’s oil level below the breach, the Coast Guard reported. How much oil leaked into the Maumee River’s mouth was not reported. Coast Guard officials said it was contained by 800 feet of oil booms.
