Libraries at Main, Heatherdowns, Oregon, Sylvania to restore hours Jan. 6

Sunday hours will be restored next month at four Toledo-Lucas County Public Library locations, the library board decided Thursday.

Beginning Jan. 6, Main Library and Heatherdowns, Oregon, and Sylvania branches will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Sanger branch will continue to be open 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Library officials said Sunday hours were brought back because voters approved its 2.9-mill levy on the Nov. 6 general election ballot.

The levy will cost the owner of a $100,000 home an additional $27 each year, bringing the total annual cost to $88.

“We made promises during the levy and now it’s time to keep those promises,” said Clyde Scoles, library director, in a statement.

“I can’t thank Lucas County voters enough for understanding the value we bring to the community.”

Night and weekend hours were slashed in 2009 after a reduction in state library funding and a drop in property tax valuations caused revenues to fall.

Mr. Scoles said the board will work to restore weekday and Saturday hours by March 1. Those new hours were not announced Thursday.

“We will not recover all lost hours but will offer more access to the highest levels of library service,” Mr. Scoles said in a statement.
