Man drowns while ice fishing in Lenawee County

TECUMSEH, Mich. -- A Saline, Mich. man drowned Thursday while ice fishing in Timber Lake in Lenawee County's Cambridge Township, authorities said.

Michael Shofstall, 62, was taken to Allegiance Hospital, Jackson, Mich., where he was pronounced dead, according to the Lenawee County Sheriff's Office.

Mr. Shofstall was pulled from 18 feet of water about 1:20 p.m. after approximately 90 minutes of search, sheriff's deputies said.

He was fishing in the company of Gerald Smith, also 62, of Grass Lake, Mich., who was rescued from Timber Lake and taken to Toledo Hospital in guarded condition, according to the sheriff's office.

Timber Lake is about 12 miles northwest of Tecumseh, which is about 40 miles northwest of Toledo.
