Columbia Gas was working tonight to restore service to customers in neighborhoods near Upton and Central avenues in West Toledo.

Outages to about 90 homes were discovered at 9 a.m. today because of water from heavy rains over the weekend getting into the utility's underground mains, said Chris Kozak, Columbia Gas spokesman.

Crews worked throughout the day to pump water from the mains, clearing the flooded lines about 9 p.m., and then began going door to door to affected homes of customers to restore service and relight the pilots on natural-gas appliances, Mr. Kozak said.

The American Red Cross was contacted by Columbia Gas to give assistance to customers who needed help, he said.
