VAN BUREN, Ohio -- A Findlay man was critically injured when a pavement reflector sent airborne by a snow plow crashed through his windshield today, the Hancock County Sheriff's Office reported.

Philip Beatty, 53, was flown to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo after the accident reported at 7:43 a.m. on Hancock County Road 220 between State Rt. 18 and Van Buren, deputies said. He was reported in critical condition at the hospital later in the day.

Mr. Beatty was southbound on Road 220 when a northbound snow plow, driven by Nicholas Stahl, 28, of North Baltimore, snagged an orange pavement reflector in the middle of the road and broke it free, causing it to become airborne, according to the report. The reflector crashed through Mr. Beatty's windshield and struck him.

Mr. Beatty was able to stop his vehicle and await emergency care, and Mr. Stahl observed the incident and also stopped, deputies said.
