Toledo area temperatures warmer, snow significantly less than average for January

One bitter cold snap does not a wintry January make.

Toledo’s first month of 2013 ended Thursday with significantly less snow than normal, and was warmer than average — though not quite as warm as January, 2012 — according to National Weather Service data.

The average daily mean temperature at Toledo Express Airport last month was 28.0 degrees, 2.5 degrees above normal.

While that was cooler than last year’s January average mean of 30.2 degrees, Toledo got even less snow last month than it did a year ago: 3.1 inches instead of 6.7 inches in January, 2012. Normal for January at the airport is 11.6 inches.

Snowfall at Toledo Express for the entire season through Thursday was 10.1 inches, 1.3 inches below 2011-12 and 11 inches below normal for the comparable period.

The temperature at the airport fell to 1 and 0 degrees on Jan. 23 and 24, respectively, but it also shot into the 50s on five different days, including the Jan. 30 record high of 63 degrees. That was Toledo’s 25th daily record high temperature since the last record low at Toledo Express — on May 28, 2008.

As of Friday afternoon, no exceptionally warm or cold weather was predicted for the Toledo area for the next week. Temperatures are expected to be slightly below normal. Light snow was forecast for today, but with accumulations of no more than about 2 inches predicted by the National Weather Service.
