Derailment blocks Nebraska Avenue

One empty Norfolk Southern rail freight car derailed Sunday afternoon, and blocked Nebraska Avenue west of Detroit Avenue. The 130-car train was pulled by two locomotives. Only a single rail car was involved and no injuries or spills occurred, according to a Norfolk Southern spokesman.

The derailed car was third from the rear of the train. The cause was under investigation.

The accident occurred art 4:56 p.m. and it also blocked a crossing used by trucks at the Airline Avenue switch yard.

Authorities say Nebraska remained closed shortly before 10 p.m.
