Lourdes men win 5th straight game

Gray Wolves women's team handles Indiana Tech

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A solid effort by the Lourdes University men’s basketball team allowed the NAIA Division II’s top defensive squad to win its fifth straight game on Saturday, 59-45 against Indiana Tech.

The victory keeps Lourdes in a tie with Madonna for second place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, one game behind Davenport in the league standings.

It’s the Gray Wolves’ third five-game winning streak this season.

Remy Fleurima led Lourdes (18-7, 13-5 WHAC) with 12 points while Corey Harvey and Enique Mason each added 10.

The Gray Wolves opened the game by building a 16-6 lead during the first 10 minutes, only to see the Warriors (19-7, 12-6) tie the contest with a 10-0 run.

A 3-pointer by Fleurima put Lourdes on top for good and started a 9-3 Gray Wolves run to close the first half.

Lourdes led 25-19 at the break and opened up the advantage as an 11-2 run during the first five minutes of the second half pushed the lead to 15. Lourdes never allowed the lead to fall back into single digits.

Jeff Hoskins led Indiana Tech with 11 points while Antonio Landers and Antonio Cannon added 10 each.

Lourdes will look to match the longest winning streak in school history on Thursday as the Gray Wolves host Siena Heights at 8 p.m.

 

Women

Lourdes 72, Indiana Tech 62

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Gray Wolves rallied from a six-point second half deficit and had three players tally double figures.

Emily Orsini had her second double-double of the season for Lourdes (8-18, 5-13 WHAC) with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Courtney Slepko scored a career-high 15 points, and Ty Ali added 14 points and four assists.

The first half was tight for the first 11 minutes with six ties and six lead changes until the Warriors (11-15, 9-9) went on an 8-0 run during three minutes to take a 29-21 lead.

Lourdes fought back, cutting the deficit to one with less than a minute to play in the first half on a jumper by Tiffany Scott.

Indiana Tech scored the final five points of the half to take a 39-33 lead into the break.

Lourdes came out and scored the first seven points of the second half, then took the lead on a jumper by Orsini to cap the run.

The lead bounced back and forth until the 10-minute mark when Slepko drained a 3-pointer, putting the Gray Wolves on top 54-52, a lead they did not relinquish.

Lourdes forced 24 turnovers, which led to 36 points. The Gray Wolves pulled down 17 offensive rebounds and converted them into 20 second-chance points.

Rachael Kruse led Indiana Tech with 19 points while Chelsea Carradine added 15.

Lourdes returns home Wednesday to host Siena Heights at 7:30 p.m.
