Brief chemical advisory in Adrian is lifted

2/16/2013

ADRIAN — Adrian residents near a dairy manufacturing business were under a chemical safety advisory for several hours after a chemical release was reported at the plant Friday.

The incident, which was reported at about 9 a.m. at Dairy Farmers of America, 1336 E. Maumee St., was cleaned up shortly after 1 p.m. and the advisory was lifted, said Laurence Van R. Alstine III, deputy chief for the Adrian Police Department.

The chemical release was caused by a barrel containing 30-35 tons of nitric acid that was off-gassing after reacting with sodium hydroxide, officials said.

As a precaution, several roads were closed and residents were encouraged to stay indoors.

The company manufactures dry condensed evaporated dairy products.
