Gary Willoughby II has been named as executive director of the Toledo Area Humane Society.

The Toledo Area Humane Society has selected a South Carolina executive officer for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals as its new executive director. The position has been vacant since John Dinon left the Maumee-based group in September.

Gary Willoughby II, 43, who starts March 20, most recently was president and chief executive officer of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare in Aiken, S.C., the Humane Society announced today.

Since joining the SPCA Albrecht Center in 2007, Mr. Willoughby II managed a successful adoption program, a spay and neuter clinic, various humane education programs, and resale shops whose proceeds benefit the mission of the SPCA Albrecht Center.

Mr. Willoughby will be paid $90,000 annually. The group’s last executive director, John Dinon, was paid $82,500 annually, according to Cyndi Condit, the humane society’s marketing/special events manager.

The Toledo Area Humane Society's board of trustees had retained the firm Waverly Partners, LLC, which has an agency in Toledo, to facilitate the search. Search consultant Joel Epstein, who is leading the effort for Waverly, previously said the salary range is expected to be $85,000 to $100,000, depending upon background, skills set, and experience.
