TIFFIN — Local attorney Victor Perez has requested permission to erect a historical marker on the site of the former 1884-built Seneca County courthouse.

The marker would be dedicated to Tiffin natives Nettie Cronise-Lutes and Florence Cronise, who were Ohio's first and second female attorneys, respectively. Ms. Cronise-Lutes was admitted to the bar in April, 1873; Ms. Cronise in September, 1873.

Mr. Perez, who spoke Tuesday before the Seneca County commissioners on behalf of the Seneca County Bar Association, said grants for the markers are available in April and October. He explained most of the marker's estimated $2,300 cost would be covered by private funding, but asked the commissioners to draft a resolution for site permission and maintenance of the area. Commissioners are expected to consider a resolution next month.

He said the marker probably would be placed on the Washington Street side of the lot, where it would not impede future courthouse construction.
