Summer jobs asked for area’s youth

Toledo Mayor Mike Bell and Lucas County commissioners on Tuesday urged area employers to consider hiring area youth for summer jobs.

Mr. Bell, along with Commissioners Tina Skeldon Wozniak and Carol Contrada, said teenagers want to find summer employment to develop business skills, find positive outlets for creativity and energy, and begin building a resume.

“This is a united effort to be able to employ kids,” Mr. Bell said during a joint city-county news conference. “Our program last year was unbelievable.”

The 2013 Summer Teen Job Fair is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11 at the SeaGate Convention Centre. In 2012, more than 2,000 young people attended the summer job fair and met potential employers, learned about summer jobs, and applied for openings with local businesses.

Businesses interested in participating are asked to call the city of Toledo Youth Commission at 419-245-1417 for more information. Employers who are not able to offer jobs are asked to consider donations to the Youth Commission to assist with programming for Toledo youth.

There is no cost for young people to attend the Summer Youth Job Fair, and preregistration is not required. Teens are encouraged to dress professionally while meeting with job fair employers and in follow-up interviews. The job fair is open to those ages 16 to 21.

The Source, Lucas County’s one-stop job agency, will be paying about $2,000 for the rental space, said Eric Walker, director of the Lucas County Workforce Development Agency.
