Hayes Easter Egg Roll honors president who started it at White House

3/31/2013

Children concentrate as they participate in the Hayes Easter Egg Roll at the Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, Ohio. The annual family activity re-creates a White House tradition started by 19th President Rutherford B. Hayes, who in 1878 opened the White House lawn for use by neighborhood children after Congress passed a law forbidding youngsters from playing on the grounds of the Capitol.
