Cars were lined up and spilling into the street today at the gas pumps at the downtown Gas and Go as drivers waited for their chance to fill their tanks with $2.99 per gallon gas.

The last time gas prices in Ohio dipped below $3 was in December, according to AAA Northwest Ohio

"I had to drive past five times before I could get in a line where I wouldn't be blocking traffic," said Mary McCarthy of North Toledo, who was putting $25 in her tank this afternoon after waiting in line abut 20 minutes at the station on Cherry Street at East Bancroft Street.

A friend had called her to alert her to the cheap gas. Although she was willing to wait, she noted that tempers were starting to flare at the congested station. There was a line of 10 cars on Cherry Street waiting to get into the parking lot.

"People are starting to get agitated," she said. "It's hot and it's hot in your car when you're waiting in line."

Sam Mahoud, manager of the station, said there had been a steady line all day since he dropped the price below $3 this morning. He said he is able to keep his prices low by not making as much profit per gallon.

According to GasBuddy.com, the average price of regular unleaded gas in the Toledo area today is $3.451 and the Ohio average is $3.603.

The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report states that the current national daily average for regular unleaded gas is $3.598, compared to $3.654 a month ago and $3.487 a year ago.

The next cheapest gas in the Toledo area today was $3.19 at the Marathon at North Holland-Sylvania Road and Dorr Street, the Sunoco and the Kroger at North Holland Sylvania Road and Bancroft Street, and the Stop 'N Go at North Reynolds Road and Darlene Drive.

The Costco on West Central Avenue and Secor Avenue, which often has the cheapest gas in the area, was charging $3.24 per gallon today, according to GasBuddy.com.
