American Red Cross issues urgent request for blood, platelet donors
7/10/2013The American Red Cross has issued an emergency request for platelet and blood donors of all blood types after receiving fewer donations than expected in June and the first week of July.
There is an urgent need for platelet donations, a key clotting component of blood. The American Red Cross Western Lake Erie Blood Region also needs approximately 300 blood donors to step forward and give blood every day.
"Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Each day donations come up short, less blood is available for these patients in need," said Kathy Smith, interim CEO of the area region.
The shortfall, similar to what the Red Cross experienced in June 2012, has been challenging for the Red Cross as regular donors have delayed giving while they adjust to summer schedules and the Independence Day holiday.
To donate, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. Donors must have a blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification to check-in. Individuals 17 and older must weight at least 110 pounds and be in good health to donate. Individuals 16 years of age can only donate with parental permission.
The American Red Cross supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood.
