Toledo Deputy Mayor Steve Herwat said today that a boil advisory continues for homes in the vicinity of a broken water main at Grantwood and Yellowstone drives in West Toledo.

The break caused flooding from the sewer system into four basements, which occurred while workers were fixing a sewer line.

"We were on Grantwood making a repair to the sanitary sewer," Mr. Herwat said in an email. "During excavation we encountered a water line encased in controlled density fill that had to be removed in order for us to repair the sewer. In the process of removing the [controlled density fill] we broke the water main."

The water main was replaced with 15 feet of new 6-inch pipe. A 12-foot cave-in is still being repaired, he said.

The boil advisory, in place since Monday night, is expected to be in effect for three to five days, said city spokesman Jen Sorgenfrei.
