Sylvania Twp. road dept. accepting bids for microresurfacing

The Sylvania Township Road Department is using a new topical sealant on residential roads in hopes to extend the life of township streets.

The township is accepting bids through Aug. 13 for a half-mile microresurfacing project on Merriweather Road that will use a pavement preservation sealant containing a cement additive.

The township has used an emulsified seal coat agent, which did not contain the additive, to coat the asphalt pavement to preserve the street.

“We want to see if we can get a couple more years out of our efforts,” Gregory Huffman, public works manager, said.

Microresurfacing is another tool for pavement preservation that closes up cracks and holes in the pavement, blocking out water, which expands on cold days, causing cracks in the pavement, Mr. Huffman said.

He expects the sealant to extend the street’s life by five to seven years.

Depending on a road’s base material and frost and thawing cycles, typically a road’s surface can last up to 18 to 25 years before it needs to be completely resurfaced.

The Merriweather Road project is expected to begin after Labor Day. The road will remain open.
