Grant to fund housing for homeless veterans

A $109,533 federal grant will provide temporary housing for up to 25 homeless veterans currently living in Lucas County.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs on Thursday announced that the Lucas County Metropolitan Housing Authority will receive the funding, which will be used to provide veterans with rental assistance and clinical assistance from Veterans Affairs.

The Lucas County funding is part of an overall $7.8 million being distributed to public housing agencies throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, said Derek Atkinson, spokesman for the Veterans Affairs office in Ann Arbor. The $7.8 million is expected to provide housing and clinical services for 1,120 homeless veterans.

Since 2008, a total of 58,140 vouchers have been awarded, and 43,371 formerly homeless veterans are in homes of their own because of the partnership between HUD and the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program, Mr. Atkinson said.
