Officials from the cities of Toledo, Maumee, and Monclova Township are considering expanding a joint economic development zone created more than a decade ago by the three political subdivisions.

A Toledo City Council committee, Maumee Mayor Richard Car, six Maumee councilmen, and the three township trustees met for a meeting to add 18 acres to the more than 550-acre zone.

The zone — bounded generally by Monclova, Strayer, and Salisbury roads, including the Briarfield business park — was created in 2003 to allow for collection of a 1.5 percent income tax from the businesses within the nearly 580-acre district.

It was challenged by a lawsuit soon after its creation, and in 2005, a judge dissolved it — a decision reversed by the Ohio 6th District Court of Appeals.
