City installs water tap for flower garden

Toledo Mayor Mike Bell presided Friday over the opening of a water tap for a South Toledo community flower garden.

The city installed a water tap, curb stop, and meter equipment to support the Burroughs Neighborhood Organization, which plans to grow more flowers on “Triangle Garden” was part of a pilot program offered through the city to encourage community gardens by making it easier to water them. The taps cost about $2,000 each and Toledo Council approved $20,000 for the program. While the city installs the infrastructure at no cost to neighborhood organizations, gardeners must contract for service and pay for the water.

City crews covered a concrete portion of Triangle Garden with mulch. A gas station once stood on the property and the concrete is likely covering underground fuel tanks. The concrete was left in place to prevent access to contaminated soil, city officials said.
