Toledoan gets 4 years in Halstead St. shootings

An East Toledo man has been sentenced to four years in prison for shooting two men through a door at a Halstead Street home.

Anthony Tardiff, 23, of 305 Willard St., cried as he apologized Wednesday to the court for the incident, saying he never intended to hurt anyone. He had entered an Alford plea to two counts of felonious assault with firearms specifications for the June 9 incident that injured Darnell Buck and Charles Jackson.

Defense attorney John Thebes said Tardiff was out with a friend when his friend made arrangements through backpages.com to meet two women at a house. They paid the women when they arrived but were later thrown out by the two men, one of whom Tardiff believed had a gun, Mr. Thebes said.

Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Linda Jennings told Tardiff he violated a basic law for people like him who have concealed carry permits — he was drinking and then took his loaded gun with him. While he said he feared for his life, she said the danger ended when he and his friend were outside the house yet he chose to draw his weapon and fire multiple times through the door.
