MARBLEHEAD, Ohio — A Marblehead, Ohio, man was killed Friday in single-vehicle crash in Danbury Township.

Jeffery Sloan, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that occurred just before 1 p.m., after his sport utility vehicle veered off Port Clinton Eastern Road just east of Lightner Road, and struck two highway signs and a tree, said Ohio Highway Patrol Trooper Zachary Yoder.

A fire started in the engine close to the gas tank as rescue crews worked to free Mr. Sloan from vehicle, the trooper said. He was pulled from the vehicle before the fire spread but never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

Troopers said alcohol was not a factor in the incident. An investigation is continuing.

Mr. Sloan’s body was transported to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.
