A Toledo man found not guilty by reason of insanity for a gas station robbery was committed on Tuesday to the Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital.

Judge Stacy Cook of Lucas County Common Pleas Court agreed with a clinical psychologist’s report that the least restrictive environment for Abbott Griffin, 57, was hospitalization.

The court will have jurisdiction over Mr. Griffin up to eight years, the longest sentence he could have received if he had been convicted of robbery.

He was arrested Aug. 28 after he assaulted an employee of Circle K, 2969 Tremainsville Rd., with a Bible. He then demanded money.

Judge Cook found that Mr. Griffin was mentally ill and did not understand the wrongfulness of his actions.
