The parents of a Woodmore High School student claim their son was assaulted and abused by other players in a hazing incident organized by the team's coaching staff at a high school football practice last September, according to a lawsuit filed today in U.S. District Court in Toledo.

The 16-year-old son of Daniel and Amy Sprinski of Elmore suffered severe and permanent injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, as the result of a drill in which some players were punished for not returning to the practice field in a timely matter, said the complaint.

The school district, Britton Devier, the head football coach, and Todd Bringman, a former assistant coach, are named as defendants in the lawsuit, which seeks compensatory damages for personal injuries, pain and suffering, disability, medical, and hospital expenses, in excess of $75,000.

Superintendent Linda Bringman could not be reached for comment. Mr. Bringman, a brother-in-law of the superintendent, quit the coach staff and his resignation was accepted by the school board on Sept. 25.

Ottawa County Mark Mulligan asked the Ohio Attorney General's Office to investigate the Sept. 10 incident after it was reported to the county's Department of Job and Family Services. The status of the state investigation was not known late today.
