Summit St. YMCA sale topic of meeting today
2/6/2014The North Toledo community group One Village Council will host a neighborhood meeting at 6 p.m. today to discuss the sale of the YMCA’s fitness center on Summit Street to a charter school group.
The meeting will be in the Friendly Center gym, 1324 N. Superior St., and will include representatives of New Plan Learning Inc., a charter school management company that operates Horizon Science Academy.
The company has asked the Toledo Plan Commission for a zoning variance to operate a charter school on the second and third floors of the YMCA building. The school now is in the downtown Secor Building.
The plan commission last month tabled the application after hearing from Toledo Public Schools officials about their proposal to obtain a federal grant to use the building in the Head Start program and plans by community groups to offer health and outreach services there.
