Authorities have evacuated five homes and temporarily sequestered students at St. Joseph School on part of Main Street in Sylvania after a gas line break in front of a residence shut down the road, Sylvania police said.

Main is closed from Monroe Street to Ravine Drive after officials say a crew working in a resident's yard struck a 6-inch medium-pressure natural gas line in the 5400 block of Main at about 3:40 p.m.

One Columbia Gas customer was without service as of 5 p.m., said Columbia Gas spokesman Chris Kozak.

Mr. Kozak said crews were in the area making sure the air is safe and, once they are able to get into the ground, will assess what type of repairs are necessary.

Authorities said that students at the school were kept inside for about an hour to avoid the disruption of cars and buses traveling up and down the road while crews tended to the break. The students were transferred from the school to its east campus shortly before 5 p.m., where parents were allowed to pick them up.
