Beginning today, new security measures will be in effect at the Toledo police Safety Building, requiring some visitors to check in with the front-desk officer.

Anyone who visits the downtown building, 525 N. Erie St., to see a specific individual must check in and provide identification, officials said. The officer will determine the appropriate person for the visitor to see and then act as a facilitator.

No one will be allowed beyond the first floor without an escort. Anyone at the Safety Building for the records bureau or credit union, which are on the first floor, will not need to check in.

“Obviously police stations need to be secured places,” police Sgt. Joe Heffernan said. “A lot of things happen in police stations, so it has to be a secured area.

“We’ve been wanting to do this for awhile.”
