Bankruptcy filings fall for 13th straight month

Filings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Toledo fell 15 percent in May compared to the same month a year ago, marking the 13th consecutive month that filings have decreased, according to monthly statistics from the clerk of courts office.

A total of 451 cases were filed last month compared with 532 cases filed in May, 2013. The Toledo court covers 21 counties in northwest Ohio.

The court saw 481 cases filed in April. Overall, there have been 2,035 cases since Jan. 1, a decrease of 14 percent compared to filings during the first five months of 2013.

Chapter 7 liquidation filings in May totaled 411 cases, down 17 percent from a year ago. Chapter 13 repayment plan filings total 38 cases, an 8 percent increase from a year ago.
