Perrysburg Twp. donates $5K to summer reading program
6/4/2014Perrysburg Township donated $5,000 to the Little Jackets summer youth reading program Wednesday with a unanimous 3-0 vote of the township trustees.
The Perrysburg School District‘s eight-week class at the Perrysburg Heights Community Center is designed to prepare children for the state‘s third-grade reading test. Children who are going into kindergarten, first, second, or third grade this fall are eligible to participate. The program costs $10 a week per family.
“I‘m supportive,” said trustee Craig LaHote. “You hear about students in these programs getting a start and hopefully it can lower crime. Make the area safer and give them a better opportunity.”
Perrysburg School District had asked for $10,000, but was thankful with the donation. Trustees told school administrators to report back about the program in September, and the township can possibly plan to budget for $10,000 next year.
The trustees also voted to approve an initiative for the November ballot, asking voters to approve a plan that would zone all unzoned land in the township.
The affected areas are south of Five Point Road, east of Lime City Road, and south of State Rt. 795. Trustees expect that about 80 to 90 percent of this land is agricultural. A map showing the proposed new zoning designation for the currently unzoned parcels will be available to voters to review before the election.
“This is one of the most important things we can do this year,” trustee Bob Mack said regarding approving the zoning initiative.
