1. City gets purchase deal for site of former Southwyck Shopping Center

Toledo has a 120-day purchase agreement to buy the former Southwyck Shopping Center site and is confident it can market the property to an end user in that time, Mayor D. Michael Collins said Saturday.

The mayor said a third party negotiated the price of $3,000,209 on behalf of the city. The former mall’s owners, based in Kansas and Texas, did not know the buyer was the city until close to the end of the process. The sale price is $51,290 per acre, compared to the list price of $72,900 per acre.

Eventual champion Lydia Ko approaches No. 8 during the final round of the Marathon Classic presented by Owens Corning and Owens-Illinois at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania.

3. FLOC leader, British allies take fight for migrant workers to N.C.

Ian Lavery’s desire to stand up for workers started in the coal mines of North East England and will take him to the tobacco fields of North Carolina, where he and a fellow member of the British Parliament will travel this week on a fact-finding mission organized by a Toledo-based farmworkers union.

Mr. Lavery and Jim Sheridan will visit the southern state during the high heat of late July, when tobacco workers toil in fields and live in migrant camps that the Farm Labor Organizing Committee contends can be unsanitary and poorly equipped.

The union planned the rare human rights visit by foreign representatives to the heart of tobacco country. The two Labor Party members will meet U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) and FLOC president and founder Baldemar Velasquez.

4. A new address for former Springfield Township co-pastors now in Gettysburg, Pa.

When the Zimmanns accepted the call to Jerusalem, Angela Zimmann, the 2012 Democratic candidate for the 5th Congressional District seat who was defeated by incumbent Rep. Bob Latta (R., Bowling Green), said, “I don’t know where this will lead.”

It led to Gettysburg, Pa., to a position as an advancement and communications executive and a teacher of preaching at Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. Martin Zimmann will be the minister for a congregation in that area. Both Zimmanns are 1998 graduates of the seminary. They have already moved into a house on Gettysburg’s campus.

5. Thousands watch dragons ply Maumee River in 13th annual fest

Overcast skies didn’t stop thousands from camping out along the Maumee River in downtown Toledo on Saturday for a bit of dragon watching.

Partners in Education held Toledo’s 13th annual Dragon Boat Festival, where rowing teams race down the river in long boats ornamented with dragon heads and tails, ending at the finish line in International Park.

“We had some rain showers, but it didn’t dampen moods,” said Jennifer Kephart, the executive director of Partners in Education, who said more than 5,000 people attended the festival.
