Sylvania council to discuss water crisis
8/16/2014Sylvania City Council will meet at 8 a.m. Monday to discuss the recent water crisis and how the administration handled it.
Council Chairman Mary Westphal said that during the committee-of-the-whole meeting, council will review how the water emergency was handled and whether things should be done differently if the situation should arise again.
From Aug. 2 to 4, more than 500,000 people in the region were without water when the city issued a do-not-drink advisory because of an algae-related toxin found in Toledo’s water supply. Sylvania, which buys water from Toledo, disconnected its water system from Toledo’s and was providing safe water to its customers from one of two water towers.
City officials did not tell the public, however, that the water system had been shut off from Toledo’s contaminated supply, leaving residents to scramble for bottled water.
