Toledo officials say they will spend $1.7M over budget to treat drinking water
8/28/2014City leaders said today that they expect to spend an additional $1.7 million this year, on top of what was originally budgeted at $3 million, on treatment chemicals for Toledo-area drinking water.
The announcement was made earlier today during a tour for media at the city’s Collins Park Water Treatment Plant. The city was put under a do-not-drink water advisory from Aug. 2-4 after tests showed high levels of microcystin in treated drinking water. The toxin is found in Lake Erie algae blooms, which typically are at their worst during fall months.
Last September, members of Mayor Mike Bell’s administration explained to city council they they had no choice than to ask for an additonal $1 million to spend on chemicals to keep tap water safe for metro-area homes and businesses served by city water.
