Perrysburg council opposes Kasich tax plan

The city of Perrysburg has joined a chorus of municipal governments in opposing Governor John Kasich’s centralized tax-collection plan.

Perrysburg city council unanimously adopted a resolution opposing the centralized collection of the local business income tax, arguing the proposal would violate home rule powers, cost the city revenue, and make tax collection more difficult for Perrysburg businesses.

“Frankly, we just do a better job of it,” Dave Creps, the city’s finance director said.

Mr. Kasich’s two-year budget proposal, pending in the Ohio House, would have the state collect municipal taxes on business income and then remit the revenue to the sometimes multiple taxing entities where they do business on a quarterly basis. The state would keep a 1 percent fee.

Council also briefly discussed Tuesday its annual budget revision. Councilman Rick Rettig advocated moving $935,000 earmarked for Hood Park improvements back to the general fund.

Funds were set aside to build additional parking, among other improvements

Mr. Rettig said the city ought to wait until the Riverside Park project is completed in May and listen for what residents want before making more improvements.
