Williams County village of Edgerton released from fiscal emergency

The village had been in fiscal emergency since Dec. 17, 2013

EDGERTON, Ohio — Auditor of State Dave Yost on Thursday released the Williams County village of Edgerton from fiscal emergency.

The village had been in fiscal emergency since Dec. 17, 2013 because of budget deficits, according to Mr. Yost. Village residents in November, 2014 approved an 0.75 per cent increase to Edgerton’s 1 percent income tax, which raised about $500,000 per year. The village also contracted with the Regional Income Tax Agency to improve tax collections. 

A municipal salary freeze was implemented and water and sewer rates were increased.

“Financial know-how alone can’t lift a government out of fiscal distress,” Mr. Yost said in a statement. “It also takes steadfast leadership and commitment from both citizens and administrators. I congratulate the community on its success, and I urge its leaders to continue working toward even healthier finances.”

Other northwest Ohio communities in fiscal emergency include the city of Fostoria and the villages of Patterson in Hardin County, Leipsic in Putnam county, and Portage in Wood County.
