The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority has scheduled a “controlled burn” Wednesday morning to destroy invasive reeds at its dredge disposal site near the Maumee River.

Starting at 10 a.m., weather permitting, about 240 acres at Facility 3 will be set ablaze with assistance from the Oregon Fire Department, the port authority said. Burning the invasive phragmites australis reeds and other weeds will support access to the site for recovery and removal of existing soil and disposal of new dredge material.

Hunters and fishermen should avoid the area during the burn, officials said. The burn was postponed three times in December because of unsuitable weather and will be postponed again if the wind direction would blow smoke toward populated areas, according to the port authority’s statement.
