  • One person is dead and two are in custody following a police pursuit that ended in officers shooting a gunman on Neiderhouse Road in Perrysburg Township, officials said Monday.

An unidentified man shot at Perrysburg Township police with a handgun before officers shot and killed him Monday afternoon, township administrator Walter Celley said.

“The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene and no police officers were injured,” he said.

The shooting came after township police stopped a vehicle with three occupants on I-75 north of the U.S. 20 exit at about 2:30 p.m. Monday.

One person was taken into custody at that scene, Mr. Celley said. The vehicle fled with the two remaining people when back-up arrived.

A second person was taken into custody while on foot near Simmons Road and State Rt. 795 after leaving the vehicle at some point, the administrator said.

The third person continued in the fleeing vehicle, which crashed in a ditch on Neiderhouse. He then led officers on a brief foot pursuit before he was killed.

The other two people in the car were taken into custody. Perrysburg Township officers do not wear body cameras, Mr. Celley said.

Mr. Celley said he did not know the reason for the initial stop or the vehicle’s origin.

“I am making an assumption that it was just a routine traffic stop,” he said.

Perrysburg police assisted during the pursuit but were not involved in the traffic stop or the final foot pursuit leading up to the shooting.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene.

Perrysburg schools Superintendent Tom Hosler said that the district has been in contact with police, and had a contingency plan for any students who cannot be dropped off at home because of the road closures.

Neiderhouse Road runs between McCutchenville and Thompson roads, east of Levis Commons in an area where subdivisions begin to give way to farm land.
