The Toledo Fire Department was on standby Monday morning while Toledo Edison investigated smoke coming from an electrical vault beneath a downtown Toledo street.

Pvt. Sterling Rahe, the fire department’s spokesman, said Summit Street was reduced to one lane each way between Madison and Jefferson avenues because of the problem in the electrical vault.

Christopher Eck, a FirstEnergy spokesman, said the vault problem was not known to be affecting electrical service to any downtown customers. Crews cleared the scene by mid-afternoon, but the utility expected to close a lane on Summit again Tuesday while installing cable to replace a secondary line that had failed, probably because of the weather, Mr. Eck said.
