A Toledo man who stabbed his father during an argument was sentenced Thursday to electronic monitoring until he undergoes a previously ordered mental health evaluation.

Conell Benton, 44, of the 2100 block of Shenandoah Road pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of assault, a misdemeanor of the first-degree. He was previously charged with felonious assault in the Feb. 16 attack on Fenton Benton, Jr., 76.

Should Mr. Benton again fail to undergo the evaluation by his next court hearing Sept. 27, he will be ordered to serve 180 days at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio, with credit for 19 days served.

On Thursday, the father requested the judge require Mr. Benton to receive counseling, rather than be incarcerated. The incident was an isolated case, the father said.

In July, Mr. Benton was ordered by Lucas County Common Pleas Court Judge Dean Mandros to undergo a mental evaluation at Court Diagnostic and Treatment Center, though it was not completed.
