Retired Toledo Public Schools teacher Shirley Mae Sebree and retired TPS principal James Sebree, graduates of Kentucky State University, were honored as distinguished alumni at a National Association For Equal Opportunity in Higher Education national leadership summit on blacks in higher education held recently in Washington, D.C.

Ms. Sebree and Mr. Sebree graduated from Kentucky State in the early 1960s and both earned master's degrees in the 1970s from Bowling Green State University. Both attended the University of Toledo, where Mr. Sebree received an education specialist degree in 1976 and Ms. Sebree a doctorate in education in 1987.

Ms. Sebree was named Jennings Scholar in 1976 and Mr. Sebree was honored for Outstanding Leadership - Principalship in 1989. Both have publications.

Winners in the Juried Student Art Exhibition held by Owens Community College include Jennifer Bandeen of Perrysburg, who took Best of Show with her ink pen portrait, "Scenes of Life," and Erin Hearndon of Perrysburg who took first place in the two-dimensional category for her black and white photograph, " Untitled."

Paige Freeseman of Bowling Green won first place in three-dimensional for her abstract ceramic piece, "Untitled."

Central Catholic High School's Irish Christian Athletes, a group of student athletes formed by physical education health teacher/assistant football coach Mitch Curliss, has been named the outstanding group of its kind in northwest Ohio.

The group was chosen from 50 similar groups in the region and recognized at a dinner held by the Northwest Ohio Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Drew Etzel and Cory Clausius, members of Boy Scout Troop 222, received their Eagle Scout awards at a court of honor held last month at Little Flower Catholic Church, when Cory also received his Pope Pius XII Catholic Scouting Award.

Cory's Eagle project involved painting the rooms in the St. Vincent de Paul Society's food pantry at Little Flower Church, adding more lighting, removing old carpeting, and adding more shelves for food storage. Cory is a junior at Sylvania Southview High School.

Drew, also a student at Sylvania Southview, organized Scouts to help Oak Leaf Village with the preparation and mulching of flower beds and the spring planting of annual flowers. He also works with younger Scouts at Camp Miakonda in the summer.

Kristin Seybold of Perrysburg, a member of the Perrysburg Stand Team, is one of five semi-finalists in stand campaign's 100 percent tobacco-free schools "Educate: Don't Contaminate" ad contest.

Participants ages 13 to 18 submitted a storyboard or a rough script for the contest. Semi-finalists were chosen from 37 entries from across the state. The winner will travel to Cincinnati to help turn the ad concept into a commercial.

Ann Bowers of Bowling Green and Robert Lucas of Pemberville are among the new board members elected to The Maumee Valley Heritage Corridor, a non-profit organization promoting the history, culture, and natural resources of the Maumee Valley.

Ms. Bowers, a board member of the Ohioana Library Association and member of the Ohio Humanities Council speakers bureau, is a retired director of the John Paulding Historical Society newsletter. She is also an adjunct instructor in the history department of Bowling Green State University.

Mr. Lucas, retired executive vice president of Huntington Banks, has been a member of the Ohio Historical Foundation for 10 years and was recently appointed to another term. For the past five years, he served as president of the United Way of Greater Toledo.

John Spore of Spore & Associates, attorneys at law in Woodville, has been chosen as a 2004 Ronald Reagan Republican Gold Medal Award winner by the National Republican Congressional Committee.

His award was given for his participation as an honorary chairman of the NRCC business advisory council.
